2008 saw the very first Treftadaeth events being held. The events were organised by the Civic Trust for Wales and IHBC in partnership with Cadw, the historic environment service of the Welsh Assembly Government.

The inaugural conference took place at the Millennium Centre in Cardiff on April 30 2008. Over 130 people attended this special event for the historic environment sector. Members of voluntary organisations together with professionals in the public, private and third sectors debated priorities within historic environment policy and strategy. Workshop sessions produced proposals for more effective partnerships and suggestions as to priorities for action.
Following the success of the Cardiff event, a north Wales one-day conference with workshops took place at Venue Cymru in Llandudno on October 23 2008. This event proved to be as successful as the first and provided an opportunity for many who could not get to Cardiff - or discovered that the event was oversubscribed - to join the debate. The conference looked at progress with a draft Historic Environment Strategic Statement and the reform of heritage protection legislation.
Workshops discussed communications, partnerships, and challenges. Outputs from the workshops developed ideas that emerged at the initial April conference, with the chance to propose action points for government and the voluntary sector.
The Heritage Minister, Alun Ffred Jones, AM, also attended both events and talked about his priorities for the historic environment and debated the issues with participants.
Treftadaeth 09 came to Aberystwyth and will next visit Swansea for Treftadaeth 2010 on 1st July 2010. We hope you will be able to join us for another important event in the Welsh historic environment calendar.
